The Basics of Poker
The game of poker is a card game that involves betting and gambling. A player’s goal is to make the best 5-card hand they can using their two personal cards and the five community cards on the table. Players place mandatory bets into the pot at the start of each hand, which are called antes, blinds or bring-ins. These bets create an incentive for people to play and are an essential part of the game.
After the antes/blinds are placed there is a round of betting in which each player has two hole cards and can choose whether to call, raise or fold. When a player calls a bet they must put into the pot as many chips as the person to their left did. If they raise or fold they are out of the hand.
A dealer then deals three more cards face up on the board that everyone can use. This is the flop. Another round of betting ensues and after this the player with the highest ranked 5 card poker hand wins the pot.
A common mistake beginners make is playing too passively with their draws. A good strategy is to be aggressive with your draws and to try and force opponents to commit more money to a showdown by raising their bets on later streets. This will allow you to either get them to fold or to make your high-ranking poker hand by the river.
