The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game, played with chips and an element of chance that can bolster or tank even the best players. It’s a test of will, a window into human nature and, with a bit of luck, a great way to spend time with friends.
Before the cards are dealt there are 2 mandatory bets, called blinds, put into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. This creates a pot immediately and encourages competition.
Once the players have their two hole cards they can either check (checking means to not bet) or raise (raising means to increase your bet). If you say “raise,” the other players must call your new bet or fold.
When the flop comes, there’s another round of betting and 1 more card is dealt face up. If you still have a strong hand, bet big! This will force weaker hands out and raise the value of your pot.
Be sure to watch other players and learn their tells. A player who fiddles with their chips or wears a ring is probably holding a strong hand. Also pay attention to how they play, for example if someone who’s been calling all night suddenly raises their bet, it’s likely that they have a strong one!
