Landmarks On Del Mar
Landmarks on Del Mar is a dramatic and exciting public art project representing the next phase in the ongoing beautification of San Clemente’s historic downtown.
San Clemente benefits from some of the most romantic and significant Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in the United States. Guided by founder Ole Hanson’s vision, architects such as Virgil Westbrook created architectural masterpieces large and small in the City’s early days.
Landmarks on Del Mar is a spectacular original tile mural project that when completed will grace both the 100 and 200 blocks of Avenida Del Mar. Working from historical landmark photographs, each image starts as a romanticized original painting in watercolor by celebrated artist Jay Fisher. Each original watercolor image is then reproduced and fired onto tiles of the highest quality and durability by renowned local tile artist, Michael King, who personally supervises the installation of each tile image in its permanent floor or wall location of each pedestrian rest area. Each landmark tile masterpiece is framed in Moorish tile and accompanied with a bronze plaque identifying the historic building, year built, architect (if available) and a dedication from its sponsor.
Landmarks on Del Mar is a joint effort of the San Clemente Downtown Business Association (DBA), San Clemente Historical Society and the City of San Clemente. Michael Kaupp, who has served on the Planning Commission and the Design Review Sub Committee (DRSC) for 14 years and on the boards of both the DBA and the Historical Society, is the prime visionary for the Landmarks project, and was instrumental in securing City funding to help the project become a reality.
As of November 2014, the project is over half completed, with eight installed images.
